If Thine Eye Offend Thee

In the same vein, let us look at the words of Jesus:

Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire. And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire.

If anything is causing you to sin, even if it means as much to you as your own right arm, you need to be rid with it. If it is a friend, in whose company you are drawn away from God, let it not be grievous to you to end that friendship. It may look innocuous, but the devil loves to deceive and get us away from the power of God that gives us the victory.  Anything, once God has brought it to your attention that it draws you from Him and causes you to be easily tossed about by the devil to sin, has no worth to you as a child of God-- it's not worth your soul!

Not My Will But Thine Be Done

I've been pondering a matter, wanting to know God's will before I do anything. I believe that it is good to take everything to the Lord in prayer and acknowledge Him in all our ways. I want to be where He wants me to be. I know from experience that He can lead me in the right way and that I can know that it is His will. He has taught me out of His holy word and done "surgery" on my heart to help me to offer up of my will as a spiritual sacrifice to Him-- and may He continue to work on me until there is nothing left of my own will and only His divine will remains.

But then I was hesitant; what if God showed me which way I should go but I could not give up what I wanted? I shudder to be like the remnant of Judah who purposed to go down to Egypt, but asked the prophet Jeremiah to inquire of the Lord his God for them if they should go or stay and whatever He said, they would obey. God knew they wouldn't obey, but still He answered them and told them not to go up to Egypt. The remnant didn't agree with God's advice, and made the excuse that Jeremiah must be working for their enemies and told them to stay only to get them killed. And so disobeyed and partook of God's wrath in the judgment of Egypt.

Am I willing to do whatever Jesus asks of me? Am I willing to go to the cross with Him? As Jesus sacrificed His own flesh's will in the garden of Gethsemane, may God give me the grace to offer up my own will for His.

As a child, I was very hesitant to make a promise, fearing I wouldn't be able to keep it and be made a liar. I remember as I studied baptism, how I wondered how I could promise to always follow Jesus. And in my own strength alone, I could never succeed. Thank the Lord, I made the decision to always follow Jesus. But it is Jesus who keeps us from falling. In my own strength, I can do nothing, but by God's grace and in His strength alone, I will always follow Jesus. And I can look back and say, it was nothing good in me, only the great matchless mercy of God, that drew me to Him. Everything I have become, any good that is found in me, is due to the mercy of my Savior alone. In me, that is, in my flesh, dwelleth no good thing.

In conclusion, I must never be afraid to ask His will, He will give me the strength I need when I need it, and help me to give up my will for His.

What a Savior!

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,

Be careful not to entertain your flesh. He that soweth to the flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption. God, in His great love and mercy has given you a heart that longs for Him; don't dull those hunger pains by going after the food of the flesh which will never satisfy. But if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the flesh, ye shall live. Don't dwell content with the spiritual food you recieved yesterday, He has something new for you today; look well to the health of your soul. Today, if you would hear His voice! Harden not your hearts.  In the book of Jeremiah, God said can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? Yet my people have forgotten me days without number! How can you bring forth fruit in your Christian walk, if you are not first partaker thereof?  Lest ye be unfruitful. Be faithful with what He has given you! He made you a new creature, that you might have the desire and taste for the new things. Don't go back to the old! It is not in your own self to have the hunger for the spiritual things, it was a gift from your heavenly Father. In me, that is in my flesh, dwelleth no good thing. I have no place for boasting: it was in His great mercy that He drew me to Himself. It was only His mercy that granted me salvation. O what mercy that Jesus met me there when I prayed and asked Him to save me from so great a death. I long for Him--this, a wonder of His mercy!

Let us the humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God, and be diligent with our talents, lest what we have be taken away.

The love of Christ, which passes all understanding, be with you.

So Run, That Ye May Obtain.

     I was recently introduced into the world of long distance running. I have found that I must be constantly preparing for a race. Before a race, I must run several practice runs, I must not eat too much before I run, I need plenty of sleep the night before, and I need to be hydrated. I must have discipline to go out and run even when I don't feel like it or else I'm not going to do so well at the race. There are a lot of things I could do that are not inherently bad but if I want to receive the prize I must put my body into subjection and say no.
     In the Bible, Paul likens our lives to that of a runner preparing to win a prize.
           Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run,                      that ye may obtain. And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all                          things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. I therefore                  so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: But I keep under my                body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to                          others, I myself should be a castaway.
    It is really just like the life we live as Christians. Jesus paid our entry fee to this race with His blood. We had better be winners. We shouldn't run the race just to make it across the finish line. We should run our best! That might mean giving up some of this life's pleasures to focus more on God and His word. But it is worth it.
    The Bible says that all these little things that we busy ourselves with for the enjoyment of our present life will be burned up.
            But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall                   pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth                     also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things                   shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and                       godliness, Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the                           heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
     So let us remember and keep our eyes on our goal. Let's not be distracted with making the journey more pleasant; it will just hinder us on race day.

For the Glory of God

"Let them praise the name of the Lord: for he commanded, and they were created."
Psalm 148:5
   Are you singing for the ears of man, or for the glory of God?
   I recently heard or read how some people sing because of the words, and other people sing because of the music. They could be singing heathen songs just as well as Christian songs. We're not singing because of the delightsomeness of the music, or our masterful ways with our instruments or voices. We're singing because of Jesus!
    The concerts I like going to best are the ones where I can feel God's Spirit there or am encouraged in the Lord. A concert like this is like a nugget of gold in a pan of rocks. Rocks may seem special by themselves, but compared with gold, they are just another rock to be discarded when we leave our earthly pleasures behind. Our relationship with Jesus is all that we will still have. Get your heavenly house built. The houses you build on earth are not as important as they appear. Eternity is a long time compared with the blink of life you spend here. Will you have something to show for your life after you are dead?

“Seek ye first the kingdom of God,
and his righteousness;
and all these things shall be added unto you.”
 --Matthew 6:33
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Mother, I am afraid; no God I know;
Please tell me an eternal way to go.
You taught me how to live, each day by day,
But I am dying, and you don't know what to say.
In our land we honor mothers high,
The very word mother exalted to the sky.
But only the mother with God in her heart
Can teach her child how this life to part.”
--Maria, a Christian in the Soviet Union
Who are you going to be?
   Someone once asked me if I were going to college. I answered no, and he then asked me what I was going to be. I thought, “Well, I already am who I am.” But I decided he really was wondering what job or what occupation I wanted in life. I started to answer, “I don't know what I'm going to be...” And he cut in with some advice on finding a husband.
   I am who I am. What I do in life doesn't have that big of bearing on who I am. Who I am is who I am whether I'm taking trash to the dump, singing at nursing homes, welding rebar, playing chess, smoothing concrete, or playing freeze-tag. These things don't make me me. God made me into me, and I'm sticking with Him no matter what I may do.
   People like to ask children what they want to be when they grow up, as if they are nothing until they become a doctor, plumber, electrician, or lawyer. So as children grow up, all importance is placed on becoming somebody. First they get their general education, and then they get a good college to make them into who they will be. This process of not quite being who you will be takes quite a long time. And, when you're almost thirty, you become who you are (maybe). And then what? All you know about is becoming and not being, so it probably takes some getting used to. And for the next thirty years, your goal is retiring. And then what?  The next big event is dying, and after that, surprise! It's the main event: heaven or hell.
   I already am who I am, and I'm not worried about anything I will be doing in the future. I do know I will be serving Jesus. My earthly occupation isn't that important. Jesus said not to even think about what I'll eat or wear. But to seek the Kingdom of Heaven first! He'll take care of all the things everyone else thinks are so important and worries about in life.
   Why worry about those things, when you know what is truly important? What is truly important is living for Jesus. If you are not, then what good is your life when it is over? So Charity, what are you going to be? I already am who I am going to be. I am a humble servant of the Lord Jesus Christ, and I will continue to follow Him. Jesus said, “A man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.” And I'm pretty sure a man's life doesn't consist of how he got the abundance of things he possesses either.
Walk in the Spirit
   Sometimes it may seem that you are your own worst enemy. Your natural man wants to walk after the way of the flesh, and no matter how hard you want to be good, you just can't. The Bible says to be carnally minded is death, and if you are in the flesh, you cannot please God. There is only one solution: the flesh must die. Jesus died and rose again that we might also die and live again by His Spirit.
   Romans 8:13 says,
“For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die:
but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body,
ye shall live.”
   Yield yourselves to God. Walk in the Spirit. Never let that old man you once were have his way; you will but forge chains of slavery for yourself. Romans continues,
“As many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.”
I know that when I pray and read my Bible, seeking God with my whole heart, He comes and is with me and teaches me like a good father does. And every time I'm with Him, I just want to be with Him more. I want to do things that please Him.
   The Devil tries to throw a whole bunch of things at you to try to get you distracted from your spiritual walk because when you are with Jesus, you are dead to all the Devil's tricks. The Devil knows that you will get weak if he can keep you away from your time with Jesus. He hopes you will yield to the flesh, so he can have you for his servant again. Resist the devil. Remember, you need not struggle.  Jesus said, in John 16:33,
“Be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”
The battle is already over, and Jesus has won. The Devil has no power over you.
   Walk in the Spirit. Do everything the way Jesus would have it done. Don't let your eyes get distracted from Him. Always take time to learn from Jesus and fellowship with Him. When planning your day, always remember Jesus is your number one priority. If nothing else gets done in your day, take time to be with Jesus. Keep your priorities straight! Jesus is always most important.
True Patriotism
   Is a true patriot one who loves his country and would do anything for it? Or is a true patriot one who clings to truth and right, and will fight to keep his country on the right path?
   Let us take Germany in World War 2 for example. Were its true patriots those who were all for Germany despite its Nazi leaders, or those who fought against the evil, even if it meant siding with the enemies of their own country? Who were the true patriots?
   I feel it is not good to be blinded by “patriotism” (love of country). Patriots by that definition would die for their country even if it were in the wrong. Countries change. Their leadership and ideals change. But good, truth, and right never change, though the general perceptions of them may. They never change because God, who set them forth, will never change. The only way to always know the truth is to know Jesus.
   If I had a country, I would rather have citizens whose only allegiance was to Jesus Christ than citizens whose love was for the country alone. They might die for the country, but would they die for the right?
   Let your allegiance be to Jesus Christ, and be not blinded by patriotism.
Haggai
   I recently read the book of Haggai. It tells about the people of Israel working hard to make themselves comfortable before building God's house. They weren't prospering. God told them to consider their ways and build God's house, and He would take pleasure in it and be glorified. All the people obeyed and feared before the Lord. So God told the people that He was with them, and they built the temple. When it was done, God told them because they hadn't turned to Him, he had caused their labors to not prosper. But since they had laid the foundation of the Lord's temple, He said, "From this day I will bless you."
   I think it is neat that the book of Haggai is an example for us in our lives. If we're too busy making sure we're comfortable and everything is fine for us before we make sure everything is right between us and God, I doubt if God will be pleased. We should always put Him first. How could we ever prosper if God is not with us? Proverbs 3:5-6 says, "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths."
   Don't think that everything would go wrong if you took time from what you think you need to do to support your life to pray and find out what God's will is. God promised that He would take care of you if you trust in Him.
   Jesus said: No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
   We just finished reading Exodus, and something stood out to me that goes along with the message. God said to take the Sabbath off even during planting and harvest. Why was it so important? In God's very creation, He created a day for resting and seeking Him. No one has any excuse for not having a time to seek God, because God made a day just for this very purpose. God wants you to seek Him above all else.
Vanya
    I just finished reading a book titled Vanya.
    Ivan (Vanya) Vasilyevich Moiseyev became a Christian in 1968. Vanya was required to join the Soviet Army when he turned 18, so in 1970, he was inducted into the Soviet Red Army. He tried to do his best at all that was asked of him. One day he was late to a drill. When asked to give an excuse for his tardiness, he said he was praying. They couldn't let one of their soldiers believe in God, as they felt that their eyes had been enlightened, and they could see the "real" world. It wouldn't do to have a soldier who was still in the dark ages and believed in God. They had been freed from such ignorance!
    Remember, when the world says, "We see," they are blind. The gospel is foolishness to the wise of the world. The devil's wisdom blinds them to God's spiritual truth.
    Through the next 2 years, Vanya endured interrogation, punishment, imprisonment, and torture. God was with him. It was so neat to see how he prized time to pray and fellowship with Jesus. He didn't own a Bible, but he knew many portions by heart. He was a witness to his fellow soldiers, and God worked many miracles on his behalf. As his time in the army was drawing to a close, the officials increased their efforts to break him. They finally said they couldn't and turned him over to the KGB who were at liberty to use whatever methods deemed necessary, even outside of the law. They were given this power so they could deal with threats to the USSR. He would not deny his faith and was tortured and killed.
    Vanya was only 19 or 20 when he died. He felt he wouldn't be coming home, and in his last letters, he encouraged his Christian friends and family and urged unsaved relatives to believe. The day before his death he wrote:
        "I desire that all of you, dear friends, young and old, remember this one verse, Rev. 2:10, 'Be    faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.' Receive this, the last letter on this earth, from the least of the brethren.
                                                                                                                     Vanya."
      In this day and in this country, we are at liberty to pray, fellowship with God, and be a witness for him. Let's each grow our relationships with Jesus. Be thankful for the freedom to pray. Be glad you can read God's holy word. Take advantage of these blessings! Seek the Lord with your whole heart! He promised that if you seek Him with your whole heart, you will find him. Labor to enter into His rest. Grow in his grace and knowledge. Put Jesus first! Seek to be weaned from the "milk" and receive the "meat." Let your house be built upon the Rock, Jesus Christ.
    In the Soviet Union, the Devil used the method of making Christianity seem like it was for the ignorant. He used persecution and laws against Christians. It seems as if in this country the Devil is not right out persecuting Christians, but is mainly focusing on distracting Christians from Jesus while acting as if he doesn't mind that we are Christians. Beware of his sneaky tricks! Don't let him lull you into his world. Keep your relationship with Jesus strong!
    Another of the Devil's tricks is also one he used in the Soviet Union. In the USSR, some churches were allowed—churches for quiet Christians who did what the government said. In the United States, the Devil tricks people into believing that all they need to do to be Christians is to be good and go to church. Remember in the Bible how it tells of some who would have a form of godliness but deny the power thereof? That way, all those who want to be Christians can be, without actually being changed by God's power and given His new life. Don't let the Devil trick you into thinking his way! "For the kingdom of God is not in word but in power." --1 Cor. 4:20
    Look to Jesus! Seek Him in earnest. Seek Him while He may be found! Remember the martyrs who gave their lives for Jesus. To them, their relationship with Jesus was worth suffering and dying for. What is it worth to you?
What are you trusting in?
Riot: a violent disturbance of the peace by a crowd, usually characterized by destruction. During a riot, looting and burning are commonplace. The death toll of riots is surprisingly high. This is the time when all those years of supporting the police force should pay off. They are your ally as the mobs draw near. You hear shots fired a couple blocks down and smell the smoke of a burning building. Then, to your amazement, you see several police cars falling back; they have been ordered to withdraw. round the corner comes a gang of rowdies, armed with a wide assortment of weapons. You hold your breath. They couldn't be—but yes, they are headed right for you as you stand in front of your electronics store. You are doomed. The mob had long waited for this day and had probably marked your store for looting during the riot preparation phase of quiet. The shattering glass hits you with the slap of reality. You are powerless to stop the mob as they carry your investments away in armloads, and as the smoke drifts upwards, your livelihood goes with it. Woe if you were depending on the police to help in time of trouble. When it really gets bad, what can they do? Apparently just let the riot, like a storm, run its course.
"Be thou my strong habitation, whereunto I may continually resort: thou hast given commandment to save me; for thou art my rock and my fortress. Deliver me, O my God, out of the hand of the wicked, out of the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man. For thou art my hope, O Lord God: thou art my trust from my youth. By thee have I been holden up from the womb: thou art he that took me out of my mother's bowels: my praise shall be continually of thee."
--Psalm 71:3-6
   What are you trusting in? Is it your strength or speed? What will happen when you're old and slow? Is it your phone? Or perhaps your gun?
   What happens when your phone batteries die and you run out of cartridges for your gun? Maybe it's your money or your ability to reason? Riches make themselves wings and fly away. Is it your charm and personality? All these fade away with time, or else are gone in a moment. All these fail and change, but God never changes. He is the only sure thing on which you can trust.
   You may be trusting in Jesus to get you to heaven, but you think you must find your own way or make one while on earth. But no! You can trust God to see you through your life also. Are you trusting in your job to put food on the table? Or maybe the government? Or are you trusting in God?
   Just think of Abraham. What would it be like if it were you? You're 75 years old. God tells you to leave, but he doesn't tell you exactly where to go. Abraham trusted that God knew where he was going, so he set out. He had no cellphone to call for directions or to make reservations. He trusted in God to keep him from dying of thirst, starving to death, or dying of diseases. I don't suppose there were truck stops every few hours where they could get water bottles, shade, or medical aid. He couldn't have loaded up into a truck and gone back when things got too tough. He traveled in an area where he knew no one. Bandits could have snuck up on him, killed him, and taken all his stuff, and no one would have known.
  Abraham trusted God. Sometimes it may be hard to know what you're trusting in until it is no longer there. When you pull out of your driveway onto those dangerous roads, are you depending on your ability to avoid all possible dangers, or blind luck that you'll not be one of the many killed every day in car accidents? Or are you committing your life to God's care? He can do much better than we humans.
  If you are totally and completely dependent on God while everything is going well for you, you will still be able to depend on Him when everything goes wrong. You'll not be afraid of losing your strength or becoming old because you never trusted in your youth or strength.
"Hearken unto me, house of Jacob, and all the remnant of the house of Israel, which are borne by me from the belly, which are carried from the womb: And even to your old age  I am he; and even to your hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry and will deliver you."
--Isaiah 46:3-4
Jesus is what is important!
           One day I was reading in the Gospel of John. John 12:42 made me stop and think:
Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue."
They believed in Jesus, but wouldn't confess him because they didn't want to be kicked out of church! I thought they were at church to seek the Lord, and now when they had found Him, they didn't confess Him because they'd rather have church than Jesus? That is really awful! I read on, and it explained why,
“They loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.”
Here is Jesus, God manifested as a man, and they are more concerned with what the church leaders would think than about what their Creator thought.
         Be careful not to be so involved in the outward showing of worshiping God that you miss out on fellowship with Him. Oh! And be careful not to be like the church leaders of that day who kicked all who knew Jesus out of their church!
          Jesus is what is important! If a church doesn't have Jesus, why have the church? If following Jesus puts you at odds with “church,” wanting to be accepted by your church leaders should not enter your mind! They won't be the ones standing at the gates of heaven giving approval to those who enter. You'd better be following Jesus if you want to be accepted by Him into heaven.
         Be glad if you have a church that doesn't kick Jesus out, but if they do kick Jesus out, you better be one of those who gets kicked out too. If Jesus is on the outside, what better place is there than to be on the outside with Him!
Lay up Your Treasures in Heaven
“Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth,where moth and rust doth corrupt,
and where thieves break through and steal:
But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt,
and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”
   I have been thinking lately about not setting my heart on things of this earth. Things on earth just don't always work out the way they are supposed to. Disappointments cause sorrow and sorrow only leads to death (Sorrow for things pertaining to our short time on earth). In the real scheme of things most of our disappointments don't really matter. You don't have to like the fact that things don't work out right, but why let it affect you? If you let yourself be overly sad about something, you'll probably find more sad things to think about and end up a bitter person who never had anything good happen to them—at least that is what it will seem like to you.
   Don't get so wrapped up in this life (all the things you do for the house you call your body); it really isn't that important. What is important is not your house, it is you! When the house you now call your home dies, where will you be living? The One who made you has made a way for you to live with Him. Accept His offer, or you will fall into the reward of your own ways. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
  Let us accept God's gift and care more about our eternal life than our temporal home. Be happy that you know your name is written down in the Lamb's book of life! Jesus is eternal, and so let us set our hearts on Him. He never will disappoint.
   In conclusion, as 1 Thessalonians 5:16 says: Rejoice evermore!
What Matters Most
   My first goal in life is to please God. What better goal is there? If I strove to be the wisest girl in the world, what would it do for me after I died? Or if I became the richest girl in the world, I couldn't take any of my wealth with me when I died. Earthly life is measured, but God's life is forever. Why would anyone choose the former? Our earthly positions won't get us a better standing in heaven.
   When I die, all that will matter is my relationship with my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, not who I was or what I did before I died.
   Isaiah 24:2 says,
“And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the servant, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the taker of usury, so with the giver of usury to him.”
   I recently read Ezekiel 32:27,
“They shall not lie with the mighty that are fallen of the uncircumcised, which are gone down to hell with their weapons of war: and they have laid their swords under their heads, but their iniquities shall be upon their bones, though they were the terror of the mighty in the land of the living.”
   What stood out to me was how that they might have been a terror to the mighty in the land of the living, but that means nothing now. Physical strength won't do us any good after our inevitable deaths, but as Isaiah 26:4 says,
Trust ye in the Lord forever: for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength.”
Be Strong in the Lord
    My parents recently commented on a couple internet news articles that mentioned Christianity. While browsing through the comments I was quite surprised when I had to search for a comment made by a Christian. Almost 100% of the comments ridiculed Christianity and Christians. I had the notion that even though there might not be a lot of real Christians, most people thought that Christianity was good. I knew that people were rejecting God and getting worse and worse, so I really shouldn't have been surprised.
    Christians may not be persecuted like the martyrs you have read of yet. But even if that doesn't happen for a hundred years, there is no excuse for not being strong.
When Joshua was getting ready to fight against Jericho, an angel of the Lord came to him and said, “Be strong and of a good courage.” So, be strong, friends. Strengthen yourselves in Jesus. Don't be blown away by the smallest winds of trouble! Don't be ashamed of Jesus!
Keep your light shining bright!
Praise the Lord!
The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him.” Psalm 28:7
I'm thankful for a wonderful year. God is so good to me; He gave me the best family in the world and a wonderful life. He made a way for me to have eternal life and has blessed me with his joy. And when trouble comes my way, I know He is with me, hears my prayers, and sees me through.
Praise the Lord!
Aunt Esther used to say that life is like a dressing room. Our time on earth is the time where we decide where we're going to spend eternity. We either start living for Jesus and begin our eternal life with Him, or serve the Devil. The Devil doesn't want us to choose eternal life, so he tries to trick us into thinking that our time on earth is the main show and we need to have all the fun we can possibly cram into our life.
We need to stay in God's presence so we can see the truth.
A Book Report
    On September 12th, Papa, Mama, my sister, and I were in town for a viola recital and took a few moments before finding our seats—or actually even the parking lot—to stop at the library to drop off books and get new ones. I thought we had allotted ourselves plenty of time to browse before picking out the books we found interesting, but when we got to town, we discovered we had taken a long time driving there. Well, I wanted to get my limit of books, so I took hurried glances at the shelves, trying to spot the fascinating ones by covers and titles. I always let a few books slip through this first process of selection because I have found fascinating books hidden under an uninteresting title. The next thing I do when selecting books is to quickly flip through the pages for an interesting bit of dialogue or a captivating passage. (Even with this selection process, a few dull books always slip through.) As I was in a hurry, these were the only ones of my book-choosing methods that were employed, and I didn't give careful thought to even these! So, I grabbed a book, flipped through it: uninteresting, put it back. “This looks interesting: keep!” Grab another, look, flip through it: “Yes, this looks fascinating.” A name of a book looked familiar: Wallenberg. “Hmm...It seems to me that many years ago I was reading a book of ours with many short stories and one was about him. I suppose a book about him would be interesting,” and so I picked out one of the books on Wallenberg and reached my limit of ten books.
     We arrived at the concert with plenty of time to spare, and had an enjoyable evening. At home, I started looking over my books again with the intent of finding the first to read. I opened Lost Hero: The Mystery of Raoul Wallenberg. It was interesting, as I had expected, and Mama asked if I would read it aloud. So I read whenever I could.
   The book starts out with a background to the Wallenberg story. The Nazis' Final Solution had touched all the Jews in Europe except for the Hungarian Jews. Hungary, a member of the Axis, had wanted to keep some of their Jews, and did not want to go along with all the Nazis' ideas.
The Germans knew that Hungary was considering negotiating a separate armistice with the allies. Fearing that the buffer of surrounding countries would be deflated, the Nazis marched into Hungary and took over the government. Adolf Eichmann, the head of the Gestapo's Jewish affairs section, was sent by Himmler to Hungary with orders to get rid of the Jews as quickly as possible and let none escape.
   By June 30, 1943, 7000 Hungarians had been deported to Auschwitz and the Hungarian countryside was free of Jews. Right before Eichmann could start deporting Jews from Budapest, the Hungarian regent, Admiral Miklos Horthy, ordered the deportations stopped. Horthy didn't want to lose all the wealthy and important Jews. Meanwhile, the Allies had learned of the Nazi atrocities toward Jews, and even though they appointed committees to see what could be done, no measures for halting the extermination of the Jews were taken. Finally, in January of 1944, a report, which charged the State Department of being fully capable of rescuing the Jews but so callous that it used its capabilities instead to prevent the rescue of Jews, was handed to the President of the United States. A week later, the War Refugee board was established. One of its plans was to send in a neutral diplomat into Hungary to try to put some Jews under the protection of a neutral government.
    They chose a Swede named Raoul Wallenberg. He was from an important banking family in Sweden. His grandfather was a diplomat. Raoul had visited the United States to study architecture at the University of Michigan and had also traveled to Palestine to work in a bank for a trading company. He was currently working for the Middle European Trading Corporation.
   Wallenberg was patriotic, calm in the face of danger, and greatly disturbed by the persecution of the European Jews. He knew how important time was in saving as many lives as possible. He immediately formed on organization to distribute Swedish protective passes to the Jews.
Other neutral countries also permitted a specific number of protective passes to be given to the Jews, but the Swedish passes were more respected. Wallenberg knew if there were too many Swedish passes, their value would lessen, so he had to distribute them wisely, but he wouldn't order those counterfeiting them to stop. He would go right to the leaders of the opposition, and amazingly, it seemed they would bow to him. At a meeting with Wallenberg, Eichmann even offered to ship the protected Jews out to Sweden for him, but he did not accept the offer, knowing that as soon as those Jews were gone, his chances of saving any more would also vanish.  After Wallenberg left the meeting, Eichmann ordered him liquidated. But Wallenberg didn't give up. He worked tirelessly and barely slept. Once, Wallenberg's car was crushed by a military vehicle. His life was in danger, but he still gave his all. He succeeded in stalling the Hungarians when they decided to give in to the Nazi's demands for the deportation of the Jews.
    But Eichmann would not be deterred from his goal either, he also knew that time was key. He started death marches to Germany without Hungarian permission. These marches contained mostly the young, old, and weak. The healthy, strong Jews were in a battalion of workers whom Wallenberg had persuaded the Hungarians to keep in the city.
   When Wallenberg heard of the death marches, he immediately got together a caravan of trucks full of food and workers, and headed out to the group farthest away at the train station. He had to pass many tired, hungry, and rugged Jews on the way, but he knew that those at the station would need help the most.  When he got to the station, he persuaded the officer in charge of loading the Jews onto the trains to let him take some off. He said that he was sure some of the Jews had protective passes and that some might have been stolen from them. He told all the Jews with protective passes to form a line and get into his truck. He looked at a blank page in his book and started calling out common Jewish names. He knew he couldn't rescue all of them, so he went through whispering, “I want to save you all, but they will only let me take a few. So please forgive me, but I must save the young ones because I want to save a nation.” He was able to save 300 of 3000 gathered at the train station on November 23rd. He unloaded most of his food for those he left behind to make room in his trucks. On the way back he would stop to grab children from the dying and hide them on the floor of his car, and also to hand out more passes. His trucks were too full to take any more adults back with him, so they would have to try to make it back on foot. He set up a soup kitchen to dispense the last of his food and medicine, but he knew it was hopeless for these marchers; even if they were permitted to go back, they were too weak to walk back to Budapest.
    But then Eichmann seemed to come to a dead end. The SS didn't want the Jews Eichmann had brought to the border. The Hungarian Nazis (Arrow Cross) didn't want to escort the marches anymore, and Himmler closed the death camps. It seemed as if only Eichmann and Wallenberg cared passionately about the fate of the Jews.
   Eichmann decided to take the work brigades. Wallenberg rushed down to the station, and once again, the officer in charge capitulated to his authority. But he was only able to save about 300 of the 17,000 in the work brigades, because the next time Wallenberg went down to the station, the officer in charge had been replaced by a senior officer who chased Wallenberg from the station. This failure made Wallenberg very miserable.
     But the Russians were coming and he worked to keep as many Jews as he could until then. The invasion was imminent, so he also made plans for a foundation to help the Jews after the war. The Germans pulled out, but that seemed only the beginning of terror. The Arrow Cross (Hungarian Nazis) now roamed free, scorning laws and authority.  While the Germans were in charge, at least there was order and some respect of authority, but now it was just chaos. The Arrow Cross would randomly pick a house of Jews and bring them to their torture chambers and then march them down to the Danube and shoot them. Arrow Cross leaders who may have kept order went into hiding, and evil had free reign.
   This seemed the most dangerous time; still, while traditional authority and power was crumbling, Wallenberg seemed to be a powerful force.  When Wallenberg's driver was taken, he got a new driver and told him to drive to the place where the old driver was held, Wallenberg walked in and took him back. He saved many of his people with ingenious methods. It was amazing that amongst such lawlessness, he still was able to exercise authority.
     For the last few days, everyone went into hiding. The Russians started going through the town. Wallenberg was the first neutral diplomat to be liberated. He was planning to go to the temporary Russian headquarters in Debrecen to propose his plan for post-war aid to the Jews and to discuss the liberation of the Jewish Ghettos. He was never seen free again.
     Some think he was one of the first victims of the Cold War. Others believe that he may have been killed in the chaos immediately following the invasion. Years later, Soviet officials claimed that unbeknownst to them, he was captured by some of their men and died of a heart problem in prison in 1947. But by then, all the people involved in this claim had already died. Wallenberg did not have heart problems, so the Soviet's explanation seemed unlikely to the author of the book. The most convincing theory of his disappearance is that the NKVD arrested him, and he remained a prisoner for the rest of his life. Sightings lead many to believe that he was imprisoned up to the mid-1960s when he was believed to have died.
      I really enjoyed reading this book, but the end of the book is quite sad, as the mystery of his disappearance was never fully solved. It was encouraging to read that one man was able to do so much to save lives, and would do it even though there were so many against him.
    But if God was for him in rescuing Jews, who could be against him?
God will see me through
   It was a rainy June day, and we had just finished music practice. I was up in my room when suddenly I heard running through the house and excited voices calling me and saying something about a tornado. It sounded like the real thing to me, so I ran downstairs to the mudroom. On the way down, I wondered what would I take with me to the storm room if I knew that all my other possessions would be gone.
   Well, I looked out the window with Mama and saw the wind rotating on the other side of our grain bins. It looked like the tornado was coming toward us. I felt afraid, and so I prayed. I felt God's peace, and I felt that everything was fine.
    Later, while surveying the storm damage, we saw that our nearest neighbor to the southeast lost his barn and had some tree damage, and our neighbor to the northeast also had trees damaged and a shed missing. It wasn't a big or strong tornado, but God was with us and protected us.
   No matter what may threaten, I can look back and see what God has done and know that God will see us through.
A Good Example
In chapter two of Malachi, God is angry with the priests because they departed out of His way. The priests were supposed to hear from the Lord, know the law of truth, be the messengers of the Lord, and turn many away from iniquity. But the priests had departed out of the way and made others to stumble, so God cursed them. Today, Christians should remember that they are the light of the world. As a Christian, you have taken the name of Jesus to yourself. If you say you are born of God, but do not act like God's child, some might decide not to follow Jesus because the Bible says that Jesus changes lives and your life isn't changed. If your parents are Christians, that doesn't make you a Christian. You must know Jesus personally. Make sure you, like the priests, do not make others stumble by not being determined to give glory to Jesus' name. If you are a real Christian, you will act like one. Give all to Jesus, and he will purify you and purge you, that you might be a pleasant offering unto the Lord. Spend time with Him every day and really set your heart to seek Him. He is the very best friend you could ever have.
“Going to church doesn't make you a
Christian any more than going to a
garage makes you an automobile.”
Seek the Lord, and you will find Him
I was recently reading in the book of Psalms, and Psalm 73:17 really stood out to me. The author of Psalm 73, Asaph, writes about how he was feeling confused "Until I went into the sanctuary of God: then understood I their end." When Asaph was with God, everything was so clear; there was no more confusion. Isn't it wonderful that we also can be in God's sanctuary? When I'm in God's presence, everything is just right. I don't want or need anything at all from this world. All I want is more of Jesus. He takes care of all my needs. When I'm not in His presence, temporal things hold more attraction, and consequently I might waste my time. But everytime I'm in His presence, I learn from His point of view. The more I'm with Jesus, the more I want to be with Him. Seek to enter into His presence. He said, "Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart. And I will be found of you, saith the Lord. " Jesus will lead and guide you into all truth.
